Which is better Line6 or Boss??

I get asked that question alot. Honestly I can't say one is better than the other. They both have their strengths & weaknesses. It comes down to what type of music you are playing and also how much control you want over your sound. I can say that the GT-10 is highly customizable and it offers way more settings than the X3. To some people that is a turn off because they don't want to get into deep editing of their tone. They just want to plug their guitar in and sound good right off the bat. The sad thing is the stock sounds that come from the factory in these modelers (both the Line6 & Boss) are not very good so most of us like to be able to change the settings to suit our needs. In the end it is you who must decide which is best for you because what is best for me may not be the best for someone else.

Never believe that something is what it is just because someone says so. One must find the truth for themselves. Only then will you know what is the best!!

  1. Glenn,

Well said. As you closed in your video there are many factors to consider other than just the multi FX pedal.

I've used a Line 6 POD XT Live in church and various situations for five years now and only had one issue that was corrected fairly easily. I've spent many hours tweaking tones and honestly it has come down to three or four "go to" patches for my situations. I downloaded tons of tones and kept coming back to my own.

I've been considering the X3Live and GT10 for over a year now. Staying with Line 6 seemed natural, except I kept reading of construction issues and other problems. Stumbling on a great on line deal for the GT10 solved the delima. And I am very pleased with it.

Out of the box some of the patches were usable. I've downloaded your patches and like them all. Not without a little hassle though. Boss doesn't provide a USB driver for a 64bit Vista system. Fortunately I had an old PC with XP and was able to get all the software and drivers loaded and running.

I've got the GT10 loaded in my pedal board finally and will take it to practice this week and to church this Sunday. Time to break it in! I'm excited about it...just hope the sound techs will be as pleased!

Thanks for your work and input.

  2. Love this blog site Glenn!

I had bought an X3 Live a few weeks ago, kept it for a little while then after reading more and seeing your vids etc, I kept going back to the GT-10.

Now...I just have to figure out how to use the 2 external controllers..The boss manual doesn't do a good job of explaining it for a noob like me. Do you need a special cord to use 2 external switches since each pedal only has one 1/4 input?

I have the same F5-SU switches (2 of them) mounted in my slick new Rondo Pedal Board case, thanks to you for the heads up.

Loving the GT-10 so far! just wish there was more info about running the extra switches and how to program the unit for them.

    Peace

  3. You will need a standard HOSA Send/Return cable. Then you will need to turn on the S/R function in the GT-10 Master/Pedal FX settings. Once thats done you need to program what the pedals do. You do that also from the Master/Pedal FX area under the assigns settings.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Thanks, I was thinking that GC would have them...Have to find where to get that cable.

If I wanted to run a phase 90, would I run that in the effects loop, keep it on (clicked on the pedal) continously, then be able to assign a momentary to say one of the 2 external footswitch controllers? Meaning, I can pick where in the effects chain I'd use the Phase 90? vs plugging it in front of my guitar before the GT-10...
You seem to be very knowledgeable. Thank you for your replies to my many questions.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Yes, you could put the Phase90 in the loop and have it on all the time and using the assigns menu you could program the external FS5U pedal to turn it on or off. Cool idea!!

    ReplyDelete
  6. The effects loop is cool, I've got mine set up. I need to change my FX chain on a patch or two though. I use my DL4 on a long delay with volume swells from the volume pedal for synth type pads on slow songs. The volume pedal needs to be before the FX loop for this.

Took the unit to practice last night and it went well. Unfortunately we practice in a different venue so I still have Sunday morning to contend with. The distortion patches sounded a little thinner than with the XTLive but I'm sure that's just in the adjusting. Overall it's clean as a whistle. I'm running direct to console and use the Line/Phones output with the +4db boost.

Do you use the Guitar 1/2/3 input select with level and presence adjustments for different guitars or do you build individual patches? My go to guitar is a PRS Custom 22, but I also have a Strat and Tele. Honestly I haven't tried this feature, just curious.

Thanks for your input. Looking forward to the next video!
    Ronny S.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Hey Ronny, No I don't use the Guitar 1/2/3/ feature. But it a very good feature if you have guitars at different output levels. Fortunatley, my 2 "Go To" guitars both have the same outputs.

    love those PRS's!!

    Cheers,

    Glenn

  8. Glenn,

In your X3 Live videos you give an EQ trick to tame some of the fizziness, do you have a similar trick for the GT10?

I was pleased with my sound today but would like to take some of the harsh high end out. The FOH tech said it was fine out front, but it was a little fizzy in the monitor mix. Could be an EQ issue there I guess, hard for me to know. He did say he tweaked my mix a little in the house.

Along the same lines do you try to give the house a signal where they can set the board eq flat or close to that?

Thanks for the input. Great blog!

    Ronny S.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Hey Ronny, yes i have an EQ fix.
    These are my settings:
    low-cut = 110hz;
    bass gain = flat;
    lo-mid = 6.3khz, Q = 16. mid = -18db;
    hi-mid = 8.00khz, Q = 16, mid = -18db;
    high = flat;
    high-cut = 6.4khz;
    level = flat

  10. Hi Glenn....
Boss GT-10 RULES..!!! hahaha, BTW, what do you think about Parker Guitars??? i saw a P-42 model for a good price... do you recomend this guitars, have experience with?.... sorry for my bad english

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hi there, yes, Parker guitars are good. I used to have one and I liked it very much. It sounded good and the pick-ups were very smooth, not muddy. Also the guitar is very light so it is easy on the back! Plus you also get the acoustic sound which BTW would sound great sith the GT-10 ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  12. Thanx for your advice Glenn... I´m between that Parker, a Jackson DX10D a Schecter Sunset (I think this model is the same new Omen model) and a Schecter Tempest... is a hard call so i´m asking you cuz you´ve more experience with guitars

    ReplyDelete
  13. Well out of all those guitars the Jackson is the only one with a tremelo. Personally I'd have to have a trem.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Ok, a plus for Jackson... the tremolo system on Jackson Guitars are good? is a good quality trem?.... Glenn ... sorry for waste your time .. but i need some help :-)

    ReplyDelete
  15. BTW, the sunset have a trem too... Schecter has 2 sunset models, with and without trem...

    ReplyDelete
  16. Oh yes, the Floyd Rose Licensed Trem on the Jackson is good. You should check out the Jackson DK2S. I have one and it is awesome guitar!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Ok, i´ll let you know, Tnaks a LOT...!!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hey Glenn,
Thx for the EQ fix, I still need to work on that some.

I've been enjoying your patches but have a question on the higher gain/lead type patches. I don't play as cleanly as you and get a lot of hand/string noise. What would be a good way to reduce some of that extraneous noise (other than cleaning up my playing, may be too late...haha)? Noise gate? Reduce gain??

    Thanks!
    Ronny S.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm pretty sure my high gain patches are already gated so I would say try to reduce the gain a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Hi glenn,

I have a new guitar... a Shecter Tempest.. it is not a top guitar but sound great... thanx for your help.. BTW.. do you think that using the 4 cable method i can override an amplifier preamp? i can get the flat response of a keyboard amp?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Cool, congrats. Lots of people like the 4CM but they use it so they can use the amplifiers preamnp section, not override it. I think the flat response you are talking comes from the speakers of a guitar cabinet, not from the amplifier.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hi Glenn,
First off, amazing playing and sounds! You truly blew me away!
I have a POD XT Live, that I play through a Carvin stereo tube power amp and cabs. The idea was to get some clean tube warmth, without really coloring the tone too much. I'd appreciate your thoughts on that.
Secondly, I've been really impressed with the tones you're getting on the X3 Live, and am thinking of upgrading from my XT Live. The dual amp/tone capability, along with vocal processing capability interest me. Does the GT-10 have these features? Any other advice you might have for choosing the right modeler? Keep rocking!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Carvin makes some good stuff!!. I would however try the X3Live through that amp before purchasing. Maybe you know a friend who has one or a music store that will let you bring your amp to the store to hook it up. You may be surprised at how the X3Live sounds compared to your XTL. I have used the GT-10 for guitar and bass recording. I don't think it's well suited for vocal recording though. Some have had trouble using the X3L to record vocals also. Something to do with the trim pot. It's a bit touchy! The X3L has mor I/O options than the GT-10 like XLR and 1/4in. outs running at the same time. It's like it's got it's own DI.

    Cheers,

    Glenn

    ReplyDelete
  24. Glenn,

I'm thinking of adding the additional footswitches like the FS5U. Do you have any opinions on the FS6, the dual footswitch? It does require power from batteries, but only for lighting the LED's. It seems those LED's could be handy from patch to patch.

Do you use the GT10's tuner? I have a TU-2 but considering taking it out of the pedal board for added space. The GT10's tuner seems accurate, but I haven't found the best way to access it (by foot) without dedicating a switch to it. Same with the tap tempo feature, my XTL has a dedicated tap/tuner switch. Oh well, just another trade off I guess.

    Thanks,
    Ronny S.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Good questions regarding the Dual FS6 switch vs the 2 FS 5U's. I got the FS5U's but am wishing there was an indicator LED to show if it's on/Off etc, didn't realize there wasn't one when I bought it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hey Ronny, well the 2 fs5u pedals for me work fine. I really didn't even know the others had a light LOL. I know when the pedal is on because the light on my GT-10 effects light turns on when I step on one of the pedals. I guess a light would be handy but the battery thing, hmmmm :(

    ReplyDelete
  27. The FS6 is a little cheaper than two of the FS5U's, but the difference could run out pretty quick buying batteries. It doesn't have a 9volt adapter but I think you can get one with a One Spot or something like that.

What about the tuner and tap tempo issues? I use tap tempo a lot on delays and tremolo. That's where I'm thinking the extra foot switches would come in handy.

    Thanks Glenn,
    Ronny

Oh, BTW, I really like the new GT10 video with the ZZ Top patch. You are awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Hey Ronny, Honestly I never use the tap tempo thing except for sometimes when recording. For the tuner I usually tune between sets and I just bend down and touch the tuner button. LOL My guitars stay in tune really good :)

    Glenn

    ReplyDelete
  29. Just bend down and touch the tuner button...lol...I never thought of that....still lol! I've always been a tuner freak, my guitars do well too I just tweak all the time.

As for tap tempo, or delay tempo I guess you have certain millisecond times you go to. I can check your patches for that. On some songs I use the dotted eighth delay that I like to tap in with the drummer, but I the boards save the setting anyway. I probably over use the delays like I do the tuner...lol...again.

Thoughts on delay settings would be cool though.

    Thanks,
    Ronny S.

  30. First off, thanks so much for helping all of us who strive to better our playing and performance abilities. I was wondering if you have any suggestions on getting the tone Slash had on Appetite For Destruction, not the later stuff? I'm aware that the producers had alot to do with it. I simply can't seem to nail it down. Thanks again for all of the vids and tips.

    Tucker

    ReplyDelete
  33. OK, if you download my X3 Bundle and load 21B into your X3 that would be the closest I would have to that sound. Nice guitar BTW.

    ReplyDelete
  34. in wich situations are GT 10 or X3 a better option than the other, in your opinion?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Live & in the studio GT-10 is great!!!! X3, not so much live because it is so hard to get a good sound with an amp. Going direct though it's great and also in the studio. All I can say is please try them both out. Bring your amp & guitar to the store if you have to. Do it right!! Don't just take someones word...

    ReplyDelete
  36. Glenn is the Man! I bought the X3 at GC, tried it out for a bit, then became a bit disenchanted with the small display, hard to reach knobs for parameter editing, that bar gets in the way...Not being able to re order the efx chain...That's huge I'm finding out. It's overall feeling of cheapness with the plastic. So even though Lincoln Brewster, whom I really dig, uses one, he keeps a "spare" for live use...This made me wonder...WHY?

Tried out the GT-10 and instantly loved it, but Glenn sealed the deal with the huge variety of tones he's shown. I'm still waiting for that Eddie patch but I'm getting close myself...

    Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Hey love your videos i was thinking and saving up money for one of those. Which one would be better for like Metal and hard rock?

    ReplyDelete
  38. umm, I think you should try them both out.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hi Glenn. Thanks so much for all the YouTube vids demoing various tones for both the X3L and GT10. Have you tried the Digitech GSP1101 by chance? If so, what are your thoughts?

    ReplyDelete
  40. No I have not but it seems like a very good unit.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Great work Glenn!

Love you original music and your covers.

My question is what are you using to program your drums? They sound very real and your able to get some nice breaks and fills on covers.

    Thanks,
    Don

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hey Don, thanks, For drums I use either Toontrack EZ Drummer (Nashville set) or XLN Audio Addictive Drums. They both have great sounds and they are both very tweakable.

  43. Glenn - You are a super talented guy and your vids really help guys like me that are trying to cut the cord on my JTM-45 and cabinet with pedals rig. I'm worried about how to find good patches from other people (like you) and then how do I put them on the Live X3? I know I'm kind of ignorant but I want to know that I can do it before buying one. Is everything I need to do that included with the Live X3 when I buy it?

Thanks a bunch Glenn, you go way beyond in trying to open these machines up to people.

    Thanks,

  44. Hi Glenn,

I loved your Queensryche cover of Breaking the Silence. What did you use to record the guitar tone? Also, I am a big Queensryche fan, and I'm wondering which unit between the POD & BOSS would get me a better Queensryche tone, specifically Rage for Order & Operation Mindcrime tones. Also, how the heck do you record mulitple videos shots of yourself playing the song? I would really love to learn how to do that, & I've never figured out how to do it. Thanks. Jason.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hi Jason. I used the Boss GT-10 for the guitar parts for that video. Both units would be good for getting those type of tones. As far as the split screening on the video it's just a simple trick used in video editing.

    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hey Carl, yes everything you need will be with the X3. Once you buy it you have to hook it up to your computer via USB 2.0. Line6 has this program called Line6 Monkey. You download it from the Line6 site, install it and when you run it it will totally configure your X3, download all of the software you need for importing tones into your X3.

    Cheers

  47. I had a Boss GT 6? I think around 2003 time frame. I was never able to get a really good sound out of it. I just purchased the POD X3 live and I think it is fantastic for the type venues I have been playing in. I also use the POD X3 with my Carvin V3 using the 4 cable method and it sounds really good. I down loaded your patches and they sound really good. Thanks for post them.

  49. Hi Glenn. Thanks for all your videos on both the x3 live and GT-10! They have been very educational. I have one small problem which I'd like your advice on.

I play in a praise and worhship band at church. The church is very small so we don't mic our amps or plug into a soundboard. I've notice with my x3 live that the tone loses some dynamics/character when heard through my amp vs my headphones. What is the best way to address this problem?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    ReplyDelete
  50. hey Glenn, I'm from Brazil and got some probs picking in beetween the GT-10 and the X3 LIVE...I play alot of heavy stuff, heavy metal, death...stuff like that..what do u think will suit me better??thanks alot for your help man!!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hey J, the thing is you have to construct new patches using your amp. I was never able to have patches that sounded good through headphones AND with the amp too. I struggled with this for countless hours. Finally I just started from scratch with the amp patches. You can find them in my bundle labeled "AMP". Give them a try.

Hey Lucas, for Metal & Death styles I prefer the X3.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Sorry to bother u again...but i heard alot of complaints about the x3l fragility..i know boss products are made like tanks..but hows the x3?i've also heard about some hardware probs...did u ever get or see any of that???
once again sorry for bothering u and thank you very much!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Hey Lucas, you heard right, the X3 is plastic housing. The one thing that Line6 got wrong with this product. That said, I had mine in a case and used it for about 65 shows with no probs. Like I say though it was in a case even on stage!! As far as hardware issues, the ones that are new now have non of the issues that the early units had.

  55. Hi Glenn,

I'm really skeptical about buying the GT-10.. I haven't tried yet but I all these years, I just wasnt impressed with COSM. I have owned the older Boss GT-6 and can truly say that they are not good amp modelers.. good effects though.. But yeah, all I wanna know is that how much has it improved since the Boss GT-6/GT-8? Is it using the existing COSM engine or a much more improved one?? Cheers!

I need a device for rehearsals playing through amps/combos trying to get closer to either Jimmy Page sound or Gilmour's or even the Edge of U2.

  58. Dmitry, Greeting from USA. The GT-10 does those tones very well with an amp.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I have the PODx3live, I 've been looking at the GT-10 . How would you compare the parallel effect to the PODx3l dual tone. On paper seems the same just different levels of controlling the tone? Have you used the GT-10 Floorboard S.W. and does it compare to GearBox? I like all the ability of the PODx3l Amps sounds but there effects are lacking some quality. Can you switch between A\B quickly and both on at the same time on the GT-10. I must have watched every video on youtube but Im coming up short. You seem knowledgeable on these areas

    ReplyDelete
  60. The GT-10 can do all the things you are asking. Dual tones, superior effects, re-routalbe FX chain and instant switching between A/B amps. (no lag). Yes Floorboard software is good but I don't use software to program. It does work well though, just not as pretty and slick GUI as Gearbox but then again Floorboard was written and given top all GT users free not by BOSS but an individual. It works well.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Glenn,
Thanks alot for your blog... you have some really cool videos and tips. I appreciate what you have done to inspire others.

I just bought a GT-10. I have a question that isn't really related to this blog post but I am sure many other people would like to know. I was curious about your process for recording... are you recording your actual drummer or are you using a VST instrument like EZ Drummer or something?

    ReplyDelete
  62. Hy Shawn, yes I use EZ Drummer for the drum sounds but I program my drum parts using a MIDI keyboard controller. EZ Drummer does however some with some already made up drum patters that are quite good!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. I figured it was... I bought Addictive Drums ($199 at GC) instead because the patches are way cheaper ($25 per pack) and I think the drum sound quality is a bit better. I just have to save enough money for Cubase or something similar now. I tried using Sony Vegas (which is what I have always recorded with in the past) and it doesn't work very well :P

    ReplyDelete
  64. I am not sure if I can post urls... so I am going to post this twice. I think this is the Floorboard software that Glenn is talking about. Am I right, Glenn?

  65. Shawn, Addictive drums is probably better than EZ drummer because of the control you have over each piece in the kit. Good choice!!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Hey Glenn, awesome tutorials. I have downloaded your bundle of patches but when I go to send them to the GT-10, it gives me an error. Says I need to make sure my MIDI setings are correct. What do I do from here? Peace.

  67. Go over to my Youtube channel and watch the video on loading my tones into your GT-10. That might help. And make sure the GT-10 USB is set to "Enable" and "Advance" in the system menu of the GT-10.

  68. Hi Glenn

Greetings from India.Have become a great fan of yours after seeing your videos and recordings. Living proof that satrianis and steve vais exist unsung.

Can you help me choose a good multieffects. I am confused between the GT-10 and X3L. If you could tell me the genres of music these are suited for It will take a lot of confusion off. Is there acoustic guitar simulation in the GT-10, or can i achieve it on the GT-10. Thanks in advance for your answers.

    Samuel

    ReplyDelete
  69. Hi Samuel, well the X3 is probably better for playing metal, trash, death-metal, things like that. Everything else the GT-10 is better at. And the GT-10 has better effects routing options (if that is important to you). The Gt-10 does have an acoustic "simulator". It works pretty well.

    Cheers,

    Glenn

  70. Hi Glen

Thanks so much for your quick reply. In fact you are going to have a huge fan following in my region, especially for your technical skills.

I am not into metal kind of music, so I guess then X3 Live is not for me. Is the GT 10 good for blues, blues rock, jazz and rock ?

Now I have some other questions as well.

    a) Does the X3 Live have an acoustic simulator ?

    b) I am looking at buying a decent 75W to 80W Solid state guitar amp. Currently I am considering the Line 6 Spider IV 75 and the Roland Cube 30X. Which one do you think is a better one for blues and other kind of music I specified.

    c) I would also be glad to know since I am going to get the GT-10, will it sound nice with the Roland CUBE 30X or the Line 6 Spider IV 75

    Thanks so much

    Samuel

    ReplyDelete
  71. Hi Samuel, The X3 has some sort of acoustic simulator but I don't think as good as GT-10. Yes GT-10 definitely great for blues, jazz, etc.

If I were you you I would look at the Marshall MG50 (not the DFX) but just the MG50 or MG100. These are 4 channel amps and paired with the GT-10 and using the stomps only in the GT-10 (I suggest starting with my AMP ONLY patches that I have for free download) This would be a great combination.

Stay away from the Roland Cube. Not a good match for the modelers in my humble opinion. As far as the Line6 Spider. Good amp but I really like thw Marshall MG50 or MG100.

    Cheers,

    Glenn

Thanks so-10 much mate. I have bought the GT-10. I would like to buy an album of yours. I listen to very melodious kind of guitar music, with lots of clean guitars and mild distortions, can you please guide me which of your albums fits my needs.

I need some good acoustic sounding patches, I wil be glad if you could share some if you have any. Could you also help me make some Eric Clapton and Eric Johnson like tones. Really thanks mate.. waiting to listen to your albums.

  75. Hi Glenn

I am back, I got the GT-10 last week. Did not have much time to play though.

I want to buy a nice album of yours, I love a lot of clean melody. can you tell me which one of yours wud suit my needs.

Another question, will my GT-10 sound good for practice at home and jamming if I buy a pair of the Yamaha studio monitors that are used for recording mixing etc. Are the Roland KC series keyboard amps a good match for the GT-10, because thats what I read are good matches. Please give me an elaborate answer.

    Samuel

    ReplyDelete
  76. Hi Samuel, if you go to my website you can sample all of my music. Thank you very much. :)

    ReplyDelete
  77. The Yamaha monitors are great for studio monitoring and the my GT-10 (using my patches) sound great through my studio monitors. The KC series amps are good for the GT-10 because they are flat response, meaning they won't change the sound of the GT-10 like a regular amplifier will.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Yo Glen

Another quick question. Is the Roland KC series good enough for live gigging with GT 10 etc, and also will it sound good with my future purchases like Pod X3 Live and TC Electronic G System. Will it sound good with some pedals from dunlop, ibanez as well ?

  79. Samuel, it should sound good with any of the digital FX modeling pedals. The G-System however does not fit in that category and really is designed to work with a traditional tube amplifier. Keep in mind the G-System has no distortion sounds so you have to use your amps distortion or use distortion pedals like I am using now.

  81. Yeah, lots of people are using the G-System. It's strengths is it's very good sounding effects and switching capabilities. It's very powerful as to what it can do with analog pedals and amplifiers. there are some youtube vids you should check out if you are interested.

  82. Hi Glenn

I hope you are doing well. I have bought the GT10 and am extremely pleased with the clean sounds. However I am looking for another modeler or effects processor that would sound different. What do you suggest in the range of $500. Do i buy the POD X3 ?. What will I find different in it ?. Please enlighten. Thanks

  83. Well The X3 will have much better High Gain tones for sure and better recording options as well. With those two units you would have everything from Clean to very heavy gain.

    Cheers,

  85. Sure you can go through the S/R loop. Then you can move the S/R block anywhere in the signal chain. Boss really got that one right!!

  87. Nice to read that such training centres are the place to be, because in reality, most students do not fit the format of education. Especially now in the digital era, schools need fresh approaches for education. Thanks for the article.
