Boss GT-10 Hot Lead Tones Demo

Here is my latest demo video. I go through some of my lead tones and explain what the different pedals on my pedal board control for each lead tone.

  1. I came across your video on youtube while looking for vids on the gt-8 ( I currently use one ). I really like the setup you have on your BOSS pedal board & was wondering if you could go into a little more detail on how you put it together.

  2. Sure, go to mu Youtube channel and watch the GT-10 Pedal Board video. It shows the pedal board closer so you can see the case and the back "doghouse" covering all of the wires.

  3. Hi Glenn,

I went out and returned my X3 Live and picked up the GT-8. Hope it works well. I wanted to thank you for putting this stuff out there and taking the time as otherwise it would have made it much harder to decide.

Your efforts and willingness to answer blogs and YouTube comments speaks volumes that you are a first class guy. Thank you!

    A new friend.

  4. Wow Mark thats cool. I hope you like the GT-10. I am really enjoying mine everytime I use it in studio or live. I am getting an Ibanez Jem tomorrow. I am picking it up from a friend of mine who works at a music store. He claims it is in mint condition and I really have been wanting one for a while now so I will bring my pedal board rig to the store and hook up the Jem and see how I like it.

    Cheers,

    Glenn

  5. Hello Glenn,
Great video as usual, thanks for sharing. I'm having a little trouble loading your GT10 patches. I've got the Librarian working and downloaded your patches. I go to Import SMF to load your bundle (which has a .mid extension) and I don't see the patches loading. Pardon the newbie question, but I'm anxious to hear the patches.
    Thanks again! Ronny S.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I too need to figure out how to import the patches...I didn't see anything on the GT Central site that pertained to this. Probably didn't know what to look for.

I also ended up getting 2 FS-5U switches and am ordering a case from Rondo soon. Wish they carried that exact one on Amazon. They have others, not that specific one...

    ReplyDelete
  7. Guys, the patches loaded in Librarian but they don't start until U10-1. You will have to scroll down the Librarian window for them to be seen.

    Thanks,

    Glenn

  8. Glen,

Do you prefer to do your patch editing on the gt-10 using an editing program ( such as mr. sleepy's ) or do you prefer editing manualy?

    Thanks,

    Sean

  9. Glenn,

Found the patches just as you said. I guess I gave up too soon.

    Thanks again,
    Ronny S.

  10. I have used both but lately I am doing it manually. I think it's better that way cos you understand the unit better.

    Glenn

  11. I have your patches in the library but cannot figure out how to get them on/into the unit to hear them. Must be something obvious I'm missing. I also downloaded the GT-10 Fx FloorBoard...Cool stuff

    ReplyDelete
  12. Mark, scroll down to my patches and press the "Temporary Write" button for whatever patch you want to hear and it will load it into your GT-10. If you like it you can then save it to whatever location you want.

  13. Awesome, thanks Glenn!

After using the GT-10, it seems as if the X3 is a bit easier to program and have more control. At least over different types of amp models and effects such as different types of compressors, chorus etc, as opposed to one general chorus, flanger etc.

Maybe I'm missing the boat. If they made a hybrid between the two giving it the GT's rock solid construction, better tuner, bigger/easier to read display, and effects chain flexability, along with the X3L's easy to navigate menus, amp models, etc.

Plus the GT's knobs are easier to work and feel like better quality...Oh well, can't have it all!

  14. Hello Glenn, I was wondering if we have any mutual guitar friends? I'm from Houston and happened across your blog and appreciated your thoughtfulness, candor and great guitar playing. I have played some with John Calderon, Al Jarreau's guitar player who is also a worsip leader. I played guitar with Houston's KSBJ Radio station for many years and got to play with some great artists (Steven Curtis Chapman and many others). Would you happen to know Jerry McPherson or Doyle Dykes? Just curious.

  15. Hey Robert, I don't know them personally but know of them.

    Thanks,

  16. Just ordered my pedal case from Rondo, they have good communication there. Thanks for the tip, I told em' you referred me. Don't know if that helps you at all but wanted to give you a plug if it could.

Can't wait to set up the GT, build the custom Dog House, and set up the 2 FS-5U switches. Great stuff Glenn!

  17. Cool Mark, I know you will like that case.

    Cheers,

  18. Glenn... You're great! I just came across your YouTube stuff. Question: What do you think about installing the Roland Ready electronics in a VG Strat (essentially sharing the GK pickup)? I have an '08 Fender Am. Deluxe VG Strat and a MIM Roland Ready Strat that I use with my GT-10. I love the Deluxe VG, but want to plug into my GR-20 as well. Any thoughts?

    Barry

    ReplyDelete
  19. Wow, that would be very cool!! The best of both worlds. Do it!! If you do let me know how it works out.

    Glenn

    ReplyDelete
  20. On a similar note? Wonder if you could run the GT-10 with either Pod Farm or Gear Box? Only if one thought the Line 6 Tones were worth having a couple but still retain the GT for everything else...

    ReplyDelete
  21. I doubt that POD Farm would communicate with the BOSS USB Driver.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hi Glenn, just picked up a GT-10. I find your videos very helpfull. One question, I am assuming you are running the external effects (VOX, EQ, and Bad Monkey) through the send/return on the GT. Curious, what order you have them in your loop.

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I have the S/R right before the Preamps. If you download one of my patches you can get an idea of how my Effects chain is set-up.

    Cheers,

    Glenn

  24. Glenn,

I really like your X3 Live videos that walk through setting up a patch. Would you consider doing the same with the GT10? That would be very helpful.

The thing I'm finding most impressive about the GT10 are the clean tones, I never could get that with the XTLive.

    Thanks!
    Ronny S.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hey Ronny, I plan to so the same with the GT-10 as soon as I get some free time.

    Thanks,

    Glenn

  26. Hi Glenn.
    I need your advice...again...lol.
I cannot decide between a ESP LTD MH-201 (Used, perfect conditions, with a hard case, stand and a guitar strap) and a Jackson DX10D, brand new... can you help me with this? i did never have play any of those guitars... wich is better?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Man they are both beautiful guitars. They both have 24 jimbp frets and they both have the same pick-ups Duncan designed HB's. I have an ESP mh-401. It;s a good guitar. It came with EMG HZ's. Thats a hard call. Is there any way you can try them both??

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yep, it´s a hard call, I´ll try to try them both, thanks for your advice, i´ll let you know...

    ReplyDelete
  29. Glenn, ran across you site while looking for old Gangster pictures. Really enjoy what you've done with the site and as a guitar player and keyboard player just watching your guides really helps me to get the guitar sounds and liks that I want to record in my home studio to sound just right.
Thanks a million and it was good to see you at
"The Station" the other night. Love the new CD.

  30. Hey thanks Roy, it was good to see you too!!

    Keep in touch,

  31. Glenn,

I've been revisiting some of your videos and have a couple questions. I've been looking at the Rondo cases and all are listed with a 1" tall lid for mounting the board and pedals. Does this allow the GT10 to be flush with the edge of the case, or did you have to raise the GT10 slightly? I guess the same would be true for the FS5U's?

And I was curious what brand guitar cables you use, looks like quality cables. And last, off the subject a bit, I was wondering what kind of acoustical sound panels you use on your walls. I need to deaden up my practice room some.

I'm loving the GT10 more each week. I've used it a month now in church and really settling in with it. Good stuff!

    Thanks for all your input.

    Ronny S.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hey Ronny,

I also just bought the Rondo case. My case has the GT-10 and 2-FS 5U's like Glenn's but without the other pedals he has.

You could use the GT-10 and FS-5U's as-is in the case but if you wanted to shim the unit up, I'd think that no more than 1/2" would be needed, perhaps a piece of plywood.

My feeling is that it's not necessary personal preference always takes priority. Just wanted to jump in but Glenn's the man :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. This is true. I actually like it this way cos' I can rest my foot on the ledge of the case right in front on a lead patch for example and then without looking I know I can just pick up my foot at that point and press the pedal for a lead.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I just put up my first ever vid on the tube. Thanks to Glenn for the tips on getting the GT-10 to sound cool....

Be kind, I'm a hobbyist at best.

    it's called gt-10 messin around

    ReplyDelete
  35. Sounds good Mark! Keep 'em coming.

    Glenn,

I was reading in Boss Central where you mentioned the Harmonic Converger made by Hadley. The unit gets great reviews. Are you running it in the loop of the GT10, I didn't see it on your pedal board?

And this is probably a really dumb question, but what is the "CW" that is referred to in those threads.

    Thanks as always,
    Ronny S.

    T

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hey Ronny, no I'm not running it in the loop. I have the stereo version (which if you were to get one that is the one I would recommend). I have it connected to the L&R outs of the GT-10 then out to PA or amp. So basically the HC is between the PA and my GT-10. The "CW" or "Cocked Wah" is a sound that some people think they hear on some of their own tones. They say the GT-10 sounds like a Wah pedal on and coked to a certain frequency that drives them nuts. I have never had that problem and honestly I just don't get it. I'm able to get whatever sound I want and I think it sounds good. Especially with the Harmonic Converger.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Thanks Glenn,

I read about each on the HC website, both mono and stereo sound interesting. I'd love to try one out to see if there is an appreciable difference to my ears. I like the idea of having it between the GT10 and PA, as a final tone shaping. I'll keep thinking about it.

Thanks also for the info on CW. I'm not sure what that is all about as to why some complain about it. I will say there is a quite a difference to my ears in tonal quality from my XTLive to the GT10. It's probably not the right word, but it sounds more compressed to me. But in a good way. Bottom line to me is that the GT10 has blown me away with clean tones. With that I can go any direction I please.

It's a great unit to me, and the fun is just beginning.

    Ronny S.

  38. Ey Glenn.. Thanks for all you've help me a lot.. i have a question, can i connect a boss metal zone, boss equalizer and a morley bad horsie to the external loop? i really like metal zone with equalizer sound.. so do you think it will work with my gt 10 patches? Do i have to turn off amps and cabs sim? Thanks..

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yes you can hook all that up to the loop of the GT-10. You don't have to turn the amps & cab sims off.

  40. Hy Glenn,

    Sorry to post as anonimous.
I really njoy your videos and I´ve learned a lot
    with then.
I have a little question. I have Behringer AB 200 footswitch and i want to know what type of cable do you use with those FS5. I´t´s a special cable or it´s a simple y cable?
Sorry to bother you with too many questions but I´ve search in Google and have no answers.
    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  41. You will need a Send/Return cable. It's basically a "Y" cable with a stereo plug on one end and two mono plugs on the other end. The two mono ends go into the AB200 and the stereo end goes in the GT-10 External Pedal 2 socket.

  45. Hi There, you put the Satchurator in the GT-10 FX loop. Then in the Master Pedal menu go to FX chain and make sure the S/R loop block is right before the preamp section.

    i have a major problem.
first i install the driver and connect the gt 10.
I stat the librarian, i try to "read" or write and
it says there is a problem with the connection.
Theres something funny though, when i pulg my gt 10 in standard or advanced it always says found new hardware and i have to install it again.
    please help me
i tried to reinstall both the driver and the librarian 10 times and still it doesnt work

    help me please

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hmmm, I'll try to help. What OS are you using??

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hey Glenn... Back in June 2009 I wrote to you about my desire to connect a VG Strat to a GR-20, like the Roland Ready Strat, which is not an option. After much thought and research, I installed a Graph Tech Hexpander and ghost pickups (saddles) on my 2008 Fender Deluxe VG Strat (I have images I could send you) and now I have the best of both worlds. Both 13-pin midi and 1/4" outputs along with 37 VG tonal variations. This setup is absolutely fantastic (at least for me).

  51. helo sir glenn i just wanna ask about ur global and output settings on your gt10, also on live situation, thank you very much. god bless!!

  52. Hey mj, yes I have the bass and high's rolled off a bit in the output settings and I have my input set at 0 and the input presence set at -4.

    Cheers

  53. Hey Glenn thanks for all the videos they are really helping me out. I was wondering if a gt 10 could work with a distortion pedal to give better hi gain sounds

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yes, absolutely it works. Currently I have a Wampler Pinnacle II in the loop of the GT-10 and I kick it in whenever I need that extra gain.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Hi Glenn, may I know what type Fender guitar you're using in your second part of this video? Looks great! Any change in accessories from original?

    Greetings from Malaysia,
    Jynn

    ReplyDelete
  56. Hi Jynn, that is a Mexican Made Strat fitted with Floyd Rose Tremelo and a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates pick-up in the bridge slot with a coil tap.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Thanks ya. By the way, can I know the price you firstly bought? Just that we in Malaysia don't have much Fender options.

    Jynn

    ReplyDelete
  58. Well the Mexican Strat was around $700.00 wioth the Floyd Rose. Then an extra $150.00 for the added features.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Thanks alot Glenn!
Guess I can roughly know the budget that I needed to get it.

    God bless...
    =)

  60. Glenn,

i see you are running a distortion pedal. i am running the gt10 and using the stereo outputs to a mesa stereo amp head... should i put the distortion pedal in the loop or on the output of the gt10 that question goes as well as for my eq..

thanks again for all the help !

    Joe

    ReplyDelete
  61. Hey Joe, yes you should put the pedal in the loop of the GT-10. Then set up a patch with the S/R loop on. Then you can move the S?R block around in the chain until it sounds good to your ears. I am using a Pinnacle II Re-Issue in the loop of the GT-10 with my Dr. Z 2x12 MAZ 38 and it screams!!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Glenn,
i checked it out... i think im gonna pick one up !

    thanks again

    Joe

    ReplyDelete
  63. Wow OK, you are going to get the Pinnacle??

    ReplyDelete
  64. Glenn,

Yes.. i am looking at it on humbucker music... thinking of a boss eq.. think i should get the ge7 with the quiet mod or the boss eq-20 ?

    Joe

    ReplyDelete
  65. Oh OK, make sure it's in stock. I had to wait 3 months for mine and I know those guys have a back log.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Glenn, the website stated in stock.. i backed off in the last moment... im thinking i would rather spend a lil bit more and get a mesa rectifier preamp.. think that i would have a couple channels and more control... have you tried the little mesa tube foot pedal ? i believe its the v-twin ? i may get one of those until i find a good used recto preamp

    Joe

  67. Hey Joe, no I have not but I have heard they sound good.

HOW DO YOU RECOMEND ME TO INSTAL THE OTHER EFFECTS, THE ORDER I HAVE TO PUT THEM, I DONT KNOW IF THE SIGNAL OF TH BANSHEE WILL MAKE ME HAVE PROBLEMS PLEASE HELP ME

    ReplyDelete
  69. Hi Glenn,

I was wondering if you could help me with my problem. I've been using my GT10 for about a year now and I found my preferred compressor settings (just a light compressor setting: sustain = 25, attack = 60, level = 50). But when I did this, it greatly reduced the output. My previous setting was: sustain = 50, attack = 55, level = 40. I plug straight to a Fender Twin Reverb amp and I use a US Standard Fender Strat. How do I increase the output? Thanks bro :).

    ReplyDelete
  70. You could use the EQ level to bring up the output.

    ReplyDelete
  71. hi glenn
i just got the music man jp6 bfr,now im looking how to get really close to john petrucci “liquid lead” tone, and rythm tone.without the mesa.and the axe fx.

  73. Hi Glenn, Question, have you ever combined POD Farm 2 and the GT-10? If so, would you use the effects loop on the GT-10 to run POD Farm? Thanks.
