What type of amp to use with your GT-10 or X3-live

Lots of people have trouble getting a good sound with their GT-10 or X3-Live with a traditional amplifier. This is because traditional amplifiers color the sound of MFX units and it takes lots of tweaking to get a good sound. I use a Traynor K-4 which is a keyboard amp. It's 350 watts, stereo. It has XLR outs so I connect my GT-10 to the main inputs on the front of the amp in stereo and I go out of the XLR's into the mixing board/PA. So I have the amp sound on stage but the PA is getting a direct signal. This is the way to go for me. I get my stage sound from the amp and the PA gets a clean direct signal. If the Traynor K-4 is a bit pricey they have smaller wattage amps in the 300 to 500$ range and are very good. These keyboard amps like the Traynor are FRFR amps meaning Full Range Flat Response so they won't color your sound like a traditional amplifier would. There are also powered PA speakers that can be used with these MFX units that also work well.

  2. I am impress with your sounds and playing. I think you should try the Axe FX Ultra and program tones for it.

  3. I would love to get the Axe-FX. Maybe one day. Need to sell a few more records though LOL. :)

  4. I have my X3 Live going through Bose L1 system that sounds amazing, plus I can use it for other instruments as well. Thanks for the X3 tones - I got them to try some of your amp tones through my Crate VC5310 (sound great!) - one question - the only tones I could load were the Tone 1 settings, so for the tones that have a stereo mix, I only had the one side - any chance you could create a bundle and post it? Thanks for all your vids - I've learned alot.

  5. Wow I bet you have a good sound with that L1 system!!

  6. I´m very interested in your explanation of using keyboards amplifiers with guitars

    ReplyDelete
  7. Well it makes sense. Think of a keyboard that puts out a stereo sound from 20HZ to 20KHZ. So the Keyboard amp is a full range amp that has that sonic range for the keyboard sound. Now take a Multi-FX unit like the POD or GT-10. These units have all of the speaker and amp modeling inside and they also output a stereo sound with a full range from 20 to 20. So it makes sense that these units would sound great with the full range Keyboard amps. A traditional amplifier and speaker cabinet focuses the sound with a heavy low to mid-range. So, by using a traditional amp you are really blanketing the full potential of a modeler like the Line6 or Boss units. That is why some people who use these units use them only for their effects capabilities and not their amp modeling. They use their real amp head for their overdrive sound and use the modeler only for effects like compression, reverb, delay, flange, etc, etc..

    Cheers,

    Glenn

  8. Great points! I have played my XTLive in front of a Fender Blues Deluxe, but like you said mostly for effects. To get higher gain sounds I did use the pod though, not great but passable. Recently I acquired the GT10, but have not used it in a live setting just yet. That will be direct to board though.

I wanted to get your opinion on using outboard effects with these pedals. I see you run yours in the effects loop. I ran mine before the pod, using the pod like I would an amp. Now with the GT10 I'm pondering each scenario. I also used a Line 6 DL4 delay modeler after the pod. I really like it that way, but it's easy to over drive it. I'll just have to weigh it out, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

    Thanks!
    Ronny S.

  9. You should definitely run your external FX in the GT-10's FX loop. That is the first thing I noticed about the GT-10 was how good and clean sounding the loop was.

  10. What do you think about Peavey Kb/a 30 Keyboard? is a good aplifier? for use with the GT-10?

    ReplyDelete
  11. It probably would sound good since it is a keyboard amp. Have not tried one first hand though.

  12. Hi Glenn,

Since you hav a post on what AMP to use, would you kind enuf to show how u hook up the POD/GT10 to a DAW instead? Basically how you setup the POD/GT10 for home recording?

P/S: Your GT10 patch sounds awesome in my GT10. Lovin it!

    Thanks
    Bryan

  13. Hey Bryan, both the POD & the GT-10 can be connected via USB, SPDIF, or the standard 1/4in. outputs. I have used the USB and the 1/4in. outputs. Honestly, I prefer to go the standard 1/4in. output route. I just go stereo out of my X3L or GT-10 into my computers audio interface. For my audio interface I am using the Gina by Event audio. I record in 24bit, 44khz and it sounds great to me. I am using Steinberg Cubase SX3 for my recoridng software.

    Cheers,

    Glenn

  14. Hi Glenn,

Thanks for the reply. Any specific reason u choose 1/4in compared to USB?

For me, i had no choice i had to use the GT10 to be an audio interface itself since my PC just have a built in soundcard which not design for recording(high latency).

    Cheers
    Bryan

  15. The only reason is because sometimes I pass the GT-10 signal through other assorted gear before it gets to the computer audio card. I could not do this with the USB.

  16. Hey Glenn,
What type of output settings should I use in my Cube 30x. Im having troubles finding a good one for that amp.
    thanks in advance

    Raphael

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hey Raphael, I would set it to studio/match direct (X3L) or Line/Phones(GT-10). I find the sound is better this way. Make sure you set the cube to a very clean channel with no drive or reverb!! very important!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Thanks!
I was trying, and started using JC-120 as an output setting, since the clean channel is called "JC Clean" ( yes I have the GT-10, sorry for haven't specified that).
But the Line/Phones appear to be better anyway.

Thank you very much for all advices.

  19. hello Glenn

    Amicalement.

  21. is the traynor amp ideal for playing live "garage" shows where the pa is just used for vocals? and as a band practice amp?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well, yes if you want a good amp that won't color the sound of the GT-10. I've done shows with it in 5,000 seat arena's and also the smallest private events with only 30 or so people attending. It's a great amp!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hello Glen, first I want to thank you for all of your efforts in helping fellow guitarists with finding great sounds with DFX modelers. I just purchased the GT-10 and play it through a Fender tube amp and I am not happy with the sound. I am looking at buying the Roland KC-350. I found it for $410 U.S.. Will I plug the GT-10 into this new amp just like I did my Fender ( one cable)or do you suggest a different way. I am looking for the same sound through my amp as I hear with no amp and just playing into my headphones. Please help! Thanks,

    ReplyDelete
  24. I would go L&R out of the GT-10 into L&R channel 1 of the KC-350. That should sound good.

    ReplyDelete
  25. You are a wonderfull person Glen.. I love watching your "Dialing in a good tone with Pod X3". Just out of curiosity, what if I want to use a tube power amp and mesa cab with my pod as a preamp. What are my option for having a good tone with that. Will I be able to use your POD patches without the cab and mic simulation. How will it sound. Please let me know.

    ReplyDelete
  26. You should do some research on the "4 cable method". As far as my patches sounding good w/o cab or amp simulation, probably not. But you should be able to use them as a starting point and tweak from there.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Hi glenn, actually I'm about to get myself a Orange Tiny Terror combo or a Bogner Alchemist, as I'm using a small 15 watt solid state amp, thought changing to a full tube amp will delivers a much promising sound. But looks like getting a FRFR amp will be a better choice for X3L use. Will using a 4-cable-method on a full tube guitar amp ect. Bogner Alchemist/ Tiny terror sound as good as using a FRFR amp?

If I were to get a Roland KC350, do I just connect one of my direct out(left or right) from my X3 to the main input of KC350, and that's all? Or I need to apply the 4x cable as well?

Very sorry for asking that much, I know nothing when it comes to amp. Your advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  28. If you are going with a tube amp I would suggest the Bogner over the Orange. I would use the 4 cable method. If you get the KC350 you can use the both L&R outs of the X3 into channel 1 of the KC350 L&R inputs. No 4CM with the KC350.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Thanks alot for ur advice Glenn! So how u see a Bogner compare to KC350? Which will be a better choice for hooking up to my X3L? Thanks again!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Well, Bogner is a really good tune amp and the KC-350 is a Keyboard amp. Totally different animals. The keboard amp will allow you to run stereo right from the GT-10 and also XLR out the the PA. The Bogner (depending on which model you get) will only be mon and you will have to mic the amp. 2 totally different approaches. Both would sound good. It depsnds what your needs are.

  31. hi nice blog.i read on here that you run your
line and boss through more routing before recording. So your Efx pedals are EQ'ed and tweaked even more through the recording software and routing hardware?

If so don't that mean that it's not just the pedal's themselves.Im asking just to get an idea
if it's being enhanced even further.

    again great blog.

    ReplyDelete
  32. You posted this question in my patch download section but I will also reply here. I run my final output through a Harmonic Converger. Google it!!! IMHO, my patches sound good without the HC but this device adds something special to the "digital" sound. It kinda makes it sound not so digital ya know??

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hi Glenn. I have tried, and twice returned a GT10 because it always sounded kind of boomy thru an amp as well as the pa. Low notes would sound like they were trying to blow the speakers. This was using the patches that came already installed. I found several that I liked, and only changed things like delay or set the solo button to a control pedal. I am considering trying it again hoping for better results. I noticed you never discuss global eq's or input output values in your video's. Is this something that might help this problem? This pedal can really do a lot and I would really like to use it.
    Thanks
    Dan

  34. Hey Dan, you should become a member of the Boss GT Central forum. They discuss in great detail inpu/output settings and also things like Equing. I think you will find some great articles on there. Do a search for a guy named Ricig. He has writtne many detailed posts on thios very subject.

  35. Glenn, thanks for all the help on modelers. One question-when using the POD's, are you padding the guitar input or leaving it at noirmal?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hey Bobby, that depends on what guitar I am using. Usually guitars that have active pick-ups will clip the X3 input. My PRS or Jackson or Jem did not need the pad but my ESP with active EMG's does. If you are hearing distortion on clean sounds then you could be clipping the input.

    ReplyDelete
  37. hey Glenn, Have you ever tried vocals through th K4 to have complete control over your mon mix in a plug & play? We use two POD XT lives and a roland synthe along with three vocals and I find that a lot of sound guys just arn't educated enough in my neck of the woods to deal with all of your tones and vocals in your mon mix. when we use our gear my 01v96 allows me complete control over our mons.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hey Bobby, no I have not tried a mic with the K-4 but it does have an XLR in on Channel 2 with Gain, Bass, Mid & Treble controls so it should work great.

  39. hey Glenn, I am running Line 6 Spider III, Pod XT Live and playing Ibanez Js1200, however cannot achieve Satriani sound not even close. Do you have a tone I can download for Pod Xt Live? It is listed on your website however I could not find it in your zipped bundle of tones... unless it's hiding there under a song title or so..
Could you pls help out I do not know what I am doing wrong. Again, I am connected from pod xt live to line 6 spider III and using Line6 Gearbox. Any help would be greately appreciated

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hey bro, My Satriani patch on the X3 uses the Zen Master amp and the Modern High Gain. You could try either one of those and see if you can get the sound like that. Nice guitar you have there BTW. I want one if those. Try the Line6 modern high gain first with about half the gain and then put a compressor stomp on it also.

  41. hi glenn
bought a boss gt10 as an upgrade from digitech rp250 and bought a new roland cube 60 amplifier.i have two inquiries

1st: what is the best way to connect the gt10 to the cube 60 as the cube doesnt have send/retrn to apply the 4 cable method !!.so for now i found setting gt10's output to 120 jc return is the best..so please advice.

2nd:the gt10 is amazing while playing and response but the tone is like a cough or as the wah wah effect is active so maybe ineed to do somthng wth EQ ?...and i still cant get deep warm tone for soloing without noise or gettin the bas hushshs of using noise sprssr im keep tryin

    thanks in advance

  43. You should try my GT-10 patches. Download my bundle and use my AMP only patches and see if that sounds good. Just put the Cube on a clean setting and come out the GT-10 mono into the Cube. Set the GT-10 on Stack/Return output mode.

    ReplyDelete
  44. i tried to change to phones/speaker mode yesterday i will try ur advice today just caring to get the tone without cutting the highs
    Thank You Very Much :)

  45. dear Glenn i was experiencing with my cube60 and gt10 after ur post and i came up with something i want to share with u guys...

1st i found to hear the difference between cabinets models and microphones is only available when sitting the output to LINE/PHONES any other selection they will be alll the same sound and tone dnt know why ..

2nd the best tone i got through cube60's clean channel when sitting the output to STACK RETURN as you advised me but no difference between all cabinets models and same for microphones ;(

    ZAK

    ReplyDelete
  46. so ive set it to LINE/PHONES and switched the bright channel on the CUBE60 and its much better now as i tried to tweak the global settings of the outputs hi low mids but no good results so switched the bright channel but mad about cabinets and mics no difference issue

    ReplyDelete
  47. If you are using an amp you really should not use the cab/mic sim anyway. That is designed for direct recording with no amp. I have it turned off on all of my AMP ONLY patches.

    ReplyDelete
  48. my digitech used to change cabinets but felt bad while playing..as how can i get ACDC tone with my 1x12 cab...i guess i will made some patches with stack return output and others with LINE/PHONE output as each one gives a different flavour between crunchy bite and thick deep

also ive noticed switching to the bright channel on CUBE 60 gives much much more life to the tone

  49. so, a KXR 100 Amp. by fender would better suit the gt 10 to attain the same sound you get through head phones? I am a new musician with about 4 mths of playing and have been planning on getting the gt 10 as I have heard u and a friend just bought one. awesome pedalboard. but he plays through headphones only. i want to get the same sound from some of the patches out of a amp. I have a fender ultra chorus right now, but am looking into keyboard amps if thats what it will take. any advice, i am not going to play live on a stage just so i can hear it outloaud with other people. thanks for any advice.

    ReplyDelete
  50. sorry glen, also can u tell me how i use the gt 10 with my amp, the configuration of the 4 cord? were i output from to what input on my amp and then how to loop using the send returns, i am completely a noob and have never miced an amp to record or anything, though i would like too.lol

  51. Hi Glenn

    Great site!

I wonder if you could help me!? I have a Fender Frontman 212R which I bought on a budget (obviously) to purely get the volume I needed to start a band with a few mates. I also have a Boss GT-6 and therefore thought that it didn't matter what amp i had because I could use the fantastic GT-6! Now I have a new problem - I would like to use just the OD/Dist part of the GT-6 and maybe at times drive the crunch channel of the Frontman with an OD-1 as you would expect. Trouble is that when trying this out the signal didn't seem hot enough for the Drive channel of the Frontman and I therefore remedied this by setting the output level in the back of the GT-6 to max - seemed like it was working as expected until I switched the channel on the Frontman back to clean and the amp boomed at mega volume even tho the volume and eq parts of the Frontman were set the same as the drive channel!?!?

Confused! Why is this happening like this? Please help!

I have not yet used the 4 lead method (will I come across the same problem?) and I think I have the output type / setting on the GT-6 to JC-120 based on the theory that the combo setting is actually for Valve combos(?).

Any info and guidance would be very much appreciated!

    Cheers

    Matt

    ReplyDelete
  52. Matt, by turning up the rear volume on the GT-10 everything is going to be at full volume. You are going to have to create patches and use the volume within the patch to set the amp volume. Your output in the back of the GT-10 should be at high noon or so. So for your clean channel create patches that have very low volume so it won't overpower your amp's channel then when you switch to your crunch channel create different patches for that channel that have the OD's at higher levels. Got it??

    ReplyDelete
  53. b, a keyboard amp would be excellent for getting the tones close to what they sound like with headphones. If you are interested in the 4 cable method or 4CM, look on the main page of my blog and I have a description on the right column about the 4CM.

    Cheers

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hi Glenn

Thanks for your response - very much appreciated. I have tried the output level at various points and it didn't seem to matter what I did with the other volume etc settings in the GT-6 - the signal just wasn't strong enough for the amp. I will have another try with the output level at 12 o'clock position and hopefully will find something else that I was doign wrong!??!!

Thinking about it - I don't think tho that the 4 cable method would suffer the same problem as the od levels wont be affected by the final output level with they!?

I have read before about the keyboard amp you suggest, but unfortunately cannot afford any more expense at present - perhaps something to consider in the future.

    Cheers again

    Matt

  55. me "the noob" again Glen sorry to be like a big bone head but, I was looking at what u use. I only really want to try 1) to get the same sound as you hear in your headphones to come out of the amp but 2) only play in my house maybe in front of a couple of freinds, not on a stage. So, my question is this..do i need a amp like the motions? or the roland KC 880 because they have 2 or more speakers to get stereo sound or will a lower watt 1 speaker amp like a Peavey kb 1 or a Roland kb mixing amp? I just dont want to spend 1500 bucks on the wrong amp and cry about it later. sorry. thanks for your reply by the way.b

    ReplyDelete
  56. oh, sorry once again..I would like to record myself at some point and am wondering if there is a cost effective way or do I have to mic it and record through some studio mixer before recording? I might put up a utube vid or send a vid to a friend who also plays..is there an easy way thats dummy proof is what i'm asking I guess..lol any suggestions on methodology or software would be greatly appreciated. as I'm not sure when u have time to read , let alone answer these blogs and other sites u run, When do u record and do ur vids? u must be a busy guy...lol

    ReplyDelete
  57. b, if you have the budget for the KC880, I would suggest the Traynor K-4 instead. The direct patches I have for download here are engineered to sound good direct and also through the K-4. The K-4 has stereo XLR direct outs and has plenty volume!! (enuff' to blow away your band mates!! LOL)

    ReplyDelete
  58. actually i dont have a budget , I just have a need to better my tones. I am currently selling my fender ultra chorus and , a ds-1 to buy a kb amp. I am still unclear, i want only to play by myself for freinds to hear not on stage or live in any capacity. do I need a big amp? with 2 speakers to get stereo or can a small amp with 1 speaker be effective? I'm not in a band. I 've only been playing for 4 mths now but want extraordinary sound.so can I get a 1 spker amp like a peavey kb 1? or do I have to have 2 speakers for stereo sound. also would you recommend I get one with a mixer? or should I use a seperate mixing board to record, remember I'm a novice not a pro like urself. thanks again for all the advice, I really appreciate it.sorry i'm such a noob...lol

  63. Hi Glen its me again...just wanted your opinion on the boss gt 8. i can pick it up used for about 250 (compared to the gt 10 at 650 after tax)i have read that many people like the gt 8 better sound wise, also that they both are very similar but that the display is better (less bright) on the gt 8. also that the sound patches are very similar, both have loopers ect. whats your opinion on the subject, many people say that the distortion on the 8 is warmer and not as sterile. if it is that good I could save 400 bucks that could go elsewhere. what is your opinion sir?

    ReplyDelete
  64. Hey b, don't have the 8 but I heard the same thing about it. Give it a try.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Great blog...I have struggled finding good tones with the GT-10 for months. Keyboard amps? Eureka!!! And my wife, who plays keys, has a KC-550 and KC-150. What output setting should I use? Thanks Greg. You have the patience of a saint. -Gary

  69. Hey Glen whats up? I am writing in hopes u might be the man to impart a bit of wisdom on how i change a midi inti a backing track? ReplyDelete
  70. by the way I went with the GT 10. and one of the reasons was all the support you have give online with it. also to be able to use your patches which I heard from a friend are quite good. Thanks for all the help you are the goods! Keep up the amazing work and videos. You really should be receiving some kind of financial backing from BOSS as you are like their premire spokesperson online. lol.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Hey b, how are you listening to the MIDI file??

    ReplyDelete
  72. either i use guitar pro 5 to output the midi to the desktop or grabbing a midi from a midi site. I tried acid pro, forge and a couple others but they are mostly wav editors.I tried widi too but with no success. It's not really that important, unfortunately I have only a pc not a mac or I'd use logic to split the file into its respective instruments and just delete the guitar part and the bump it out.I did however have a relative question (sorry I'm noob central over here, been playing like 4 mths)

    ReplyDelete
  73. soryy bout the books I write , lots of reading I know.lol I was just wondering if you had done a video or have on your blog how to record with the gt 10. I was purusing the manual and its kind confusing to me at this stage. if you do have one can u point me in that direction and I'll get outta your hair so to speak..

    ReplyDelete
  74. Hey b, you need some sort of VST Instrument to play the MIDI files. I would suggest Edirol. They have an inexpensive one and the sounds are quite good. You could make your MIDI's into wav's with Acid and the Edirol VST plu-in.

About the recording. I always have just used the L&R outputs of the GT-10. It seems to give me a good enuff sound that way.

  76. hey glenn at roland Q & A they said when using gt series with cube 60 amp flat th EQ and it wont colour ur tone ..mm do u think so ? u advised me to choose stack return output with cube 60 and it was the best and v good now i tried line/phones output as i wanted ur patches and be able to use cab and mic simulations and i changed the global settings...but wht do u think about using cube 60 flatted EQ as u r using ur trynor amp ?

Check to make sure the USB is set to "enable" and "advanced" in the system menu on the GT-10. I remember I used to have to reset this every time I hooked my GT-10 up to my computer via USB

  86. I'd say that would be a good trade, the Cube for that KXR 100.. Good luck, hope you get it.

  87. it is set to those settings but i changed them both, restarted to change them back to those settings. the usb sees the pc because librarian will load temp patches and such but before when i would open a backing track on my pc , i could hear it in my headphones and the guitar now the sound is going to my speakers not my headphones.

    ReplyDelete
  88. plus if i opened up sony acid pro i could open a backing track, hear it in my headphones and record a guitar improve over it now i cant and my sound icon used to get cancelled out but now does either!?

    ReplyDelete
  89. Brett, sounds like Acid lost the connection between the GT-10 and the device driver. Look in Acid for ASIO driver and switch it back to the GT-10 USB driver. That should do it.

  91. Hi Glenn!

May I kindly ask your suggestions to connect POD X3L with my huge Roland Acoustic Chorus 100 amp.

    http://www.musiciansfriend.com/document?doc_id=82041

Up until now I have been going from 1/4 POD Left Mono to Return to of Roland amp (I have tried the front inputs of amp but it sounds terrible). Is this the "standard my to connect?" to this kind of amp?

The amp does have 2 XLR outs and now that I have read your post I will connect XLRs of amp to PA.

I will say that when I have done XLRs of POD to PA in Match Studio Direct Mode, it doesnt sound as good as the amp. Some patches, not all, will sound thinner or distort when going to PA.

I suppose with this Acoustic amp going to Return I CAN leave the POD's Amp/Cab Sims on right?

    What do you think?

    Thank you

    ReplyDelete
  92. My amp does not have L&R input like the KC350

In the front it has High and Low Piezo inputs and an Aux input

    ReplyDelete
  93. You know what Glen, someone gave me this explanation to my question which in a nutshell says that my patches on the PA probably dont sound the same as in the amp because I tweaked them in the amp....so do you tweak your X3L sounds to a PA?

    http://line6.com/community/message/128746#128746

    ReplyDelete
  94. Hi Sebastian, It's hard to make patches that sound good through the amp and the PA at the same time. It's possible but hard. You have to spend alot of time and also at real world volume levels instead of bedroom volume levels. That way you can really hear how the amp sounds.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Thanks Glen!

-So you have mostly tweaked your patches/sounds to a PA?

-Do you set Live Out switch AMP or LINE switch?

I have worked really hard to get to know the X3L and tweaked my stuff a lot. I cant say I have had opportunities to tweak it to a PA. Im stuck at a plateau in terms of sound clarity, quality etc. Not sure if the answer is going to PA or it could be EQ in the end?

    ReplyDelete
  96. Hi Sebastian, yes my X3 patches are optimized for PA use. At the time I was using the X3 I was not using an amp on stage so the patches I created worked well for direct to PA. I have the AMP/LINE switch set to Line and the output mode set to Match Studio Direct.

  97. Hello again Glenn,
I know I'm asking you tons of questions and help, i really appreciate it.
Yesterday, I went to a jam with my Roland Acoustic Chorus 100 amp. I forgot my PODX3. At the jam someone let me use a Dunlop MXR Analog pedal. I hooked up to pedal and front of the amp, plus a little of the amps built in chorus and the tone fatness and warmth overall sounded amazing (didnt event bother to adjust the amps bass, treble, mids, almost no tweaking). It made me realize that the amp itself is pretty darn good (and its solid state). I have never obtained that type of amazing sound from the POD. Im not dishing the POD, I don't wanna give up on the POD, Ive worked hard at it. What is your guess of what Im not doing right?

    http://www.jimdunlop.com/index.php?page=products/pip&id=366&pmh=products/p_and_e_detail

    ReplyDelete
  98. Hi Sebastian, it's not that you are doing something wrong it's just that it's hard to get the POD or any digital modeler to sound as good as an amp and pedals. So That's what modelers do, they try to recreate the "Amp & Pedals". They only come close to the real thing. Why don't you try using the X3 as an effects pedal only. Not using any of the amp or cab models. Use only the OD stomps and other effects.

    ReplyDelete
  99. ahhhhhhhh I see....well, I am really glad I asked because I was going nuts. Well, fyi, before the PODx3l, I had never bought any pedals so the POD IS 1st pedal system. So your answer in a way is "good news"... And yes, I have now begun experimenting with the 4 cable method.

I do wonder how much more superior the POD can sound via PA (and properly tweaked to PA)....vast difference?

Well, if you don't mind continuing this conversation...do you use external analog pedals along with your X3L?

You know, I play in an 80s cover band and since we try to stay close to the original I have many different saved patches on the POD with different tweaks etc....so I guess in the analog world people have to constantly adjust their pedals huh?

    Thanks for your time

    ReplyDelete
  100. Well, currently I am using the TC Electronic G-System along with the TC Electronic Nova Drive, the Wampler Pinnacle II Reissue and a Zvex Vexter Box or Rock. All analog pedals and they all go into a 50 watt tube amp with two 2x12 extension cabs. Just got back from a concert using this rig for the first time and it sounded really good. I will be doing a video demo of the new rig very soon.

    ReplyDelete
  101. HI Glenn, I got the GT10 having seen your videos and read your blog. Your info has been invaluable.
I currently use a 15 watt valve amp which I'm thinking of getting rid of. I'm looking at either getting the Roland KC350 or possibly an active PA monitor. I know the Roland should be great but how about an active monitor (i'm looking at at a 12 inch 120Watt). I presume It will have the same flat response as the Roland so should sound good. Am I right? Cheers Dez

    ReplyDelete
  102. Hey Dez, yes any PA type or monitor would sound good. I am curious though why would you get rid of the amp? Before you do that you should at least try my GT-10 patches that I made for use with an amp like yours. You may be surprised at the sound. Either choice though would be good. The KC350 is good but the high end on those is kinda shrill for my taste. I guess that could be dialed back with the GT-10 global EQ though so no worries there.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Is the G System superior to the POD X3L in terms of sound?

    ReplyDelete
  104. Hi Glenn, My amp is a Laney vc15 which I do like but it breaks up a little too soon which is why I was thinking about the KC350.
I haven't tried your patches though, will do. Should I run the Laney using the 4CM? So far i've only gone straight into the front of the amp and changed the output mode to small amp. Cheers Dez

    ReplyDelete
  105. Oh yes, by far. The G-System is designed to work with your amplifier and analog pedals not become your amp with pedals. if that makes any sense.

    ReplyDelete
  106. hey that's a good amp. If you try my patches just go into the front of the amp as you do now and set the output mode to "stack return". make sure you try the right ones. I have some that are for use with an "AMP ONLY". Don't even waste your time with the others cos' they are for direct recording and don't sound good with an amp.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Yes that makes sense about the G System, thank you.

In a nutshell, do the pros ever really tweak and play plugged to PAs??? Are PAs designed at all to enhance the sound of guitars? Im asking this based on the whole PODX3 being played thru a PA. I just cant get it to sound good when directly going to a PA.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I mean that question in terms of sound POD to PA vs Guitar to Amp

    ReplyDelete
  109. By the way, what do you think of the Fender Super Sonic amp to use that with digital boxes such as POD (no amp on POD). Been thinking of just getting a tube amp.

    ReplyDelete
  110. Yes, I know there are some that use POD to PA to get there sound. I used it direct to PA for year and it sounded good. I could never get the POD to sound good with any of my amps. The GT-1o however sounded great with my tube amp and my custom patches. Here is the thing! POD, Boss GT-10, Digitech RP1000, etc, etc.. all of these units claim they can sound like a real amp, or several amps and cabinets so you don't need a real amp and cab. They come close, and they are getting better. Now in the higher dollar market you have Digidesign Eleven Rack and Fractal Audio Axe FX Ultra. These units are even closer to the real thing and some argue better. I guess it depends on the user. Fender Super Sonic!! Wow pricey. . . If you get that amp you should try a few analog pedals with it. I can recommend the Wampler Pinnacle II Re-Issue, the Zvex Box of Rock or Distortron or the Majik Box Rocket Fuel.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Cool thanks Glenn and thanks for the pedal suggestions! Quick follow up ....you say couldnt get the POD working to your satisfaction with your real amps.... even using the POD only for effects (no POD amps)? Or how do you mean? Im asking because I have been wondering if the Super Sonic (going thru the front of it) would add life to the POD....

I would switch all analog in a heartbeat but Im still trying to figure out how to get the best of both worlds...analog sound + ability to store various stomp and effect presets too so I dont have to knob around (example 80s cover band).

The Fender Super Sonic.........I havent tried that many amps out overall...I liked its clean and even its overdrive but my main question is if this is a good amp to use normal and to combine its with digital pedals fx (no digital amps).....

On the other hand, I'm wondering which amps with 2x 12's could sound great overall too (so that can finally fulfill my stereo delay fantasies ;)

So it seems you used the POD for a while but are now moving on up huh? Is POD the only one that does dual tones by the way?

    ReplyDelete
  112. Hi glenn, thanks for the advice I downloaded your patches and they sound great on my VC15. One question. I'd like to add a bit of high end eq to all the patches. Is this possible or does the eq in the Master section only apply to the patch you're on? cheers Dez

    ReplyDelete
  113. Dez, yes you can change the global EQ in the System section/ Input/Output, page 2 of the menu is the global EQ.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Sebastian, The POD can be used effectively for effects only with an amp and that would be the way I would run it with my amps. Use your amps overdrive and even the POD stomp distortions if you have to but no POD amps or cab sims.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Hi Glenn!

    How are you?

Did you ever get cleans out of the X3L?

I have tried your clean EQ trick and in some cases also not used and amp in the POD, but hmmm, my cleans seem to lack the presence of say a Fender amp and the minute I add the X3L Choruses it kills the tone.

Im looking at Line 6 M13 but no idea what tube amp or maybe the Spider Valve with tubes.

    Just curious what you think

    ReplyDelete
  116. I meant great/good cleans. sorry. My definition of very good clean is Fender HRD, Bassman or Rolands with their fat built in chorus in their amps

    ReplyDelete
  117. Hey Sebastian, The M13 is a good unit. I will be reviewing thew Lin6 M9 in a couple weeks as soon as Line6 sends me the unit so if you are interested in 6the M13 you can see my review. I will be going through all of the sounds. The cool thing about these is they are stomp box modelers, not amp modelers so they work well with your tube amp.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Hi Glenn,

Sorry to keep flooding you with questions.

But I think I have finally almost found the best set up: KC 350 + Line 6MKII Bogner 212 tube amp (thru the power amp only). Tried that at store sounded amazing, very stereo and fat. However, people on forums say thats tricky to mix live. But guy at store says he sees it all the time on the road, people using 2 amps, clean and 1 dirty, I guess sometimes one at a time, sometimes both at the same time. Well when I was doing my experiment, 2 amps at same time sounded amazing. Not sure If both amps should be identical or having 2 different amps is a good thing. All I know is that it sounded huge and I have never gotten this amazing sound going from the X3L to the PA

    But i wanna be practical.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Oh yeah 2 amps is always better to get that stereo effect going on stage.

    ReplyDelete
  120. In my experiment, done in isolation at the store (no band), both amps seemed to compliment each other (frequencies). Im guessing live I would sometimes have to shut off the Roland for heavy rock sounds that fizz on it.

But I wonder if maybe I should just do 2 identical amps?

Overall, what is your bluntest assesment of this?

    thank you once again Glenn!

Obviously, your feedback is huge for me!

    Sebastian

    ReplyDelete
  121. If it were me I would do 2 identical amps.

    ReplyDelete
  122. For 1; it looks really cool, 2; Once you get one amp sounding good the other should sound just as good. 3; It looks really cool LOL :)

Seriously though I would only get 2 tube amps or combo's not 2 KC350's. Cos that is a stereo amp so you are defeating the purpose right?

    ReplyDelete
  123. Glenn,

    I have a KC150. Should I use the
    "Lines/Phones" output select and the
"phones" 1/4" jack to link to the KC150.

I've tried it using the "phones" jack, the "mono" jack, and the L R into L R. I think phones sounds better but I'm not sure I'm doing it right.
Also, if I use the "phones" jack, I should be able to use the cab simulator, right?

    Thanks for the help.

    Gary

    I also have a KC550. Same question.
    Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Hey Gary, yes you should be using Line/Phones output and I would come out of the L&R outs, stereo into the KC not the phones plug.

  125. Hi Glenn!

Do you know the guitarist Paul Jackson Jr?

Im trying to recreate his tone on the X3L but it aint that easy....

    Heres an example:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UU2b2sK7aqk

    ReplyDelete
  126. The link you have here is to a Madonna song.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Yes, because Paul Jackson Jr played on a bunch of albums including Madonna albums. He also was on Michael Jackson albums like the funky solo during Billie Jean

    ReplyDelete
  128. OK, well you'll need a strat using the bridge and middle pick-up position. Use the Line6 Sparkle model with the Celestion 25 Grerenbacks, just the ever so slightest touch of chorus and some reverb and you should be close.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Thanks Glen! This is Sebastian by the way, using another Google account. Its tough getting a clear but warm sound on the X3L sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Glenn, apologies if this entail covering old ground but I have your GT 10 patches which sound great on my Mac but I cannot reproduce it in my studio. Am I right in thinking that all your patches are set to Line/Phones and intended direct to a desk? I do have a keyboard amp but it's nothing sonically flash and I have been hooking the GT 10 up to my Hot Rod Deluxe or other guitar amps with the 4 cable method. EQ and colouring aside, even the overdrive intensity seems lessened compared to the patch in your download area. I changed the output on the patch to Combo Return but presume the settings on the patches must be adjusted entirely to produce the sound you have created for direct to PA use. I have only previously ever used individual stompboxes hence the newbie-esque question about the GT 10. Many thanks for any assistance.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Chris, you may want to try my AMP ONLY patches from my bundle. These would be starting from 1-1 thru 5-4. They were created for an amp and I use Stack/Return output mode. They might sound good with your Hot Rod amp. Also check toe global output EQ in the System section under Input/Output. There you can shape the sound for your amp.

    ReplyDelete
  132. ris said...
Thanks Glenn. I downloaded them all once before so I'll locate the patches 1-1 to 5-4 inclusive and try them again allied to the Stack Return or Global EQ output. The Holy Grail of Effects Processors still eludes me and may do forever although, obviously, technology continues to improve. In trying to create various overdriven tones I have otherwise been using a made-in-Australia, MI Audio Crunch Box/Keeley-modded BD-2/Compressor/Java/Katana/Fulltone/Tonebone Hot British or Classic, Ibanez Ue 300 with TS-808, a Boss DD-2 and a Maxon AD-999 for delay, EVH phaser, Ernie Ball, Decimator, Budda Wah and other decent gear for listenable studio level and live shows/musicals etc so I'm pretty fussy but always willing to check out new gear. Have you tried the new Line 6 MFX? I almost bought the G-system some time ago as a colleague of mine endorsing Laney and others uses it successfully but, personally, I'm open to suggestions as to the best gear currently available. Obviously, like other things, tone is a subjective matter but I'd be interested in your enlightened opinion. Many thanks, Glenn.

    ReplyDelete
  133. As far as I know right now the best MFX unit is Axe FX Ultra. Digidesign Eleven Rack is also very good. I have not tried any of these but there are planty Youtube vids on both units.

  134. Hi Glenn,
I'm curious about something. You said you were going with a keyboard amp because it won't color the sound the way a traditional amp would. But since the K4 has a tube preamp per each channel in channel 1, isn't the sound being colored by the clipping of the tube...or do you only use the solid state channel?

    Thanks
    SFC Guido

  136. hi Glenn i just swaped my guitar amp with a Fender KXR100 keyboard amplifier and i connected my gt10 to it and set the output to LINE/PHONE and the amplifiers equalizer all set to 12o'clock..LOW, LOW MID, HIGH MID, HIGH i guess its flatted like tht and the amp should be a FRFR but i got a bad tones and very tribley should i cut the highs in the amp EQ or wht please help.

    thanx in advance.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Instead of changing the patches try adjusting the Global Output EQ located in the System>Input/Output section.

    ReplyDelete
  138. ok whats your global setings please i will apply it

    ReplyDelete
  139. Here are my global EQ settings for my Dr. Z amp. Keep in mind now this may not work for you but you can try it.

    LOW GAIN - -8db
    MID GAIN - 0db
    MID FREQ - 1.25khz
    MID Q - 0.5
    HIGH GAIN - +4db

Play around with these setting till it sounds good to you. You need to have your amp really loud too to do this. Don't do this at bedroom volume because it will sound like crap when you turn your amp up loud.

    ReplyDelete
  140. i got it and yeah even throught headphones of the amp not the gt10 it dounds different than throught the amplifiers speakers.

    Thanks alot Glenn u r awesome :)

  142. Hi Glen.
Having just purchased my GT-10 2 days ago after much deliberation I would firstly like to thank you for your site and youtube tutorials which has made my transision from my old Zoom 4040 much easier. Regarding sound quality I must admit I have no problems in this department playing through my amp ( Roland JC 120 purchased in 1994, when I had no wife kids etc.) Either directly to the jack input, or through the FX loop on the rear. However playing through a reasonable set of earphones i find a lot of tweeking has to be done to get good clear hi gain settings that dont sound mutted or choked. The gt-10 is some piece of kit and will take many months to master.

    Many thanks again

    Graeme S.

  143. Glenn,

I get what you're saying about using a keyboard amp with the GT-10 to avoid the coloring that a traditional guitar amp causes. They are a bit pricey though. I have a ART Pro MPA II mike preamp. So how about if one were to run the GT-10 through that, and than running the output into a speaker cab (the more neutral the speaker output the better)?

    Thanks hoss
    Rik Guido

  144. That might work better than a traditional amplifier. I know lots of people that are doing that.

I'm using the GT-10 without the preamp. What is the best way to link the effects without spoiling the tone of the Fender Blues Deluxe? Thank you!

  146. Hi Glenn,
Your tips and tricks have helped me alot with setting up my GT-10.
Like many others, I've had trouble running it through my traditional guitar amp.
I've looked into the use of a simple tube pre-amp and cab combo, as well the keyboard amp method ... would Roland JC-120 also do a decent job of emulating the amp models ?
    Thanks!

  147. Question:
I have the Roland KC-880 with this stereo link for another KC-880.....I'm using it for guitar synth (VG's & GT-10) and it is huge. I wonder if I could link instead to a JC-120?
