5/27/09 Introduction

I'll start by saying that I use Line6 & Boss gear. I have the Line6 POD 2.0, XT-Live, X3-Live, Variax models 700Trem and the 600 model. I also own the Boss GT-10, Roland GR-33, and a Roland VG-88. I can say that the sounds in the GT-10 are way more advanced than the VG-88. I use all of this equipment in my studio where I record my music. I have several self-produced albums and I also do composition for film and television. I have been playing professionally for 31 years.

  1. I'm really on the fence between choosing the X3 and the GT 10. Being that I have to pick one...

Seems like from what I've read online, the X3 has had some quality/build issues but the sounds are great. The smallish display, lack of harmonizer, looping etc is a factor...While the GT 10 seems to be more bullet proof in terms of build but doesn't have the cool Pod Farm PC type environment to play around with setting tones. The distortion tones may not be quite as good, hard to tell.

I bet you could make and sell quite a few tutorial DVD's on setups as well as the anatomy of certain tones etc.

your stuff here is AWESOME!! Can't thank you enough for putting the tutorials on You Tube.

    Thanks for your contribution.

    God Bless You

  2. Hey Mark, thanks for the blessings. :-) Your observations on both units are correct. After having each one for a while now and using both of them in a live situation, for me the GT-10 is better. I can get better tones from it and it has more extrenal pedal options than the X3-Live. I don't use the harmonizer much on the GT-10 but it works very well. I do however use the whammy effect on the GT-10 and it is the coolest thing for solo's. I get some really strange looks from people in the audience when I engage the whammy and use it. They can't figure out how I am making that sound. It's kinda funny LOL.

    anyway . .

    Cheers,

    Glenn

  3. I didn't see your comment yesterdayd and went out and got an X3 Live, hoping that is a good choice for worship band and home noodling.

I tried to download your patches, got them unzipped in a folder but getting them into the X3L doesn't seem to be working. Must be operator error!

Thank you VERY much for taking the time to share your hard earned knowledge and patches. It helps a Noob like me get up to speed a bit quicker.

  4. Hey Mark, I think Gearbox is what you would use to load my X3 patches.

    Good luck,

  5. Hey Glenn,

I found a great on-line deal for the Gt-10 and got Musicians Friend to match it. Just received it Friday. Out of the box it's very cool. I have downloaded your patches but haven't had time to work them in yet. I've A/B'd a with my XTLive through my mixer and I can tell it's going to work out great. I'm dying to use it in church immediately, but will work on the patches a while first. So many options. Thanks for the email and help in my deciding. Great work and service you are providing! God bless,
    Ronny S.

  6. Hey Glen, i've seen some whammy patches created in the pod x3 live, someone also told me that the x3 live was the best choice for home recording, and that its distortion qualities were far better than roland ones... is that true?

  7. HMMM, I am not conviced of this!! For me the recording qualities of the GT-10 are excellent. It has USB recording direct to computer with no issues!!! I just finished a practice session with the GT-10 playing along with the entire AC-DC's Back In Black album & the new Back Ice album and the GT-10 has this sound nailed!! I could never get this sound with my X3L.

Ill bet you are an 80's throwback like me,lol. I want to build me a home recording studio that gives me an awesome stereo sound. i have a mesa v-twin with direct out and a digitech 2120. i would like to keep it rack mounted if possible. what are your suggestions for a nice setup...effects processor, monitors, mixer, programs. it will be in my bedroom, and just for me to record at home. i also have a mesa road king for sale on ebay right now...Thanks Alot!!!!

  10. Hey James, those are some nice amps you have!! For your home studio you could do everything inside of the computer. You would first need a good audio interface. Look at Edirol, they have very good "table-top" audio interfaces that come with all of the software you will need to start recording with your computer. You would also need a good drum creating program. I would recommend Toon Track's EZ Drummer. If you really want to go the mixer route check out Alesis. They have digital mixers that you can connect to your computer. These also come with recording software.

    Good luck,

    Glenn

  11. Glenn,

Have you been moving towards more using the GT-10? I bought the X3 Live but have been starting to wonder if the GT-10 might be more versatile down the road. I love EVH tone, Journey Tone, VAI from Crossroads Movie (Carvin era) ADA MP-1 Preamp tones...Wonder which unit might be better suited for that kind of stuff. Love your site here and the vids on YouTube...Thanks again!

  12. Well, the GT-10 surely does all of those tones very nicely. No doubt the GT-10 is more versitile. They both have their own strengths & weaknesses.

    Cheers,

  13. you are an awesome and unique individual, thanks for all you do, really. i know you play through a traynor, and its a neat amp, but when you do videos how do you record such good sound. do you connect you camera to a computer via interface, does it stand alone. how do you record? thanks

  14. I record into my computer software and sync the audio up with the camera footage.

    Thanks,

    Glenn

  15. I had the gt-10 and found the switching of presets to leave a "dead spot" in the signal.
